EBD Group and MassBio forge alliance to change the face of biotech partnering in North America
MassBio Investors Forum to fold into BioPharm America™ 2010
Carlsbad, CA, and Cambridge, MA – April 14, 2010: EBD Group and MassBio today announced the formation of an alliance that creates the foundation for one of the largest and most productive partnering events in North America. Under this agreement, MassBio will fold its premier partnering conference, the MassBio Investors Forum, into EBD Group’s BioPharm America™ 2010 conference, to be held September 15–17 at the Marriott Boston Copley Place.
As a result, BioPharm America continues its growth as an unrivalled business exchange in North American for the global life science industry, specifically designed to help companies raise capital, form in- or out-licensing agreements, and enter co-development deals.
In addition to pulling together the large and active participation of the Massachusetts-based life science community, BioPharm America 2010 features partneringONE®, the industry’s most advanced partnering system, and a top notch program that includes the Defined Health Therapeutic Insight track. Working together, these powerful elements create a singular platform where companies can efficiently identify and meet with potential partners from across the biotech value chain, and gain the intelligence needed to make better decisions and better deals.
“For most life sciences companies today, strategic partnering is a pre-requisite for long term success,” said John Maraganore, PhD, Chief Executive Officer of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals. “The upcoming BioPharm America 2010 event aims to bring together the decision makers from across the biotech industry value chain to engage in one-to-one meetings and create the collaborations driving the industry forward.”
Carola Schropp, President of EBD Group, said, “We are excited to work with MassBio towards building the most productive biotech partnering event in North America. We believe that working with allies like MassBio will put BioPharm America on a trajectory to match our European events, BIO-Europe and BIO-Europe Spring®, in both size and partnering activity.” EBD Group’s most recent event, BIO-Europe Spring 2010 in Barcelona, Spain, saw over 1,700 delegates from 1,061 companies engage in over 9,000 one-to-one meetings.
Robert K. Coughlin, President and CEO at MassBio, said, “By folding the MassBio Investors Forum into the BioPharm America conference we are creating a unique, high powered business exchange that unites the international biotech partnering and financial communities. Boston is the crossroads of innovative biotechnology companies, top-tier venture capital, and big pharma research and development. This is a stellar combination that will help ensure that BioPharm America is the place where successful partnerships get started.”
MassBio estimates that nearly 1,273 biotechnology drugs were being developed in Massachusetts in 2009, representing almost 8 percent of the global drug pipeline. In 2009, Massachusetts companies garnered more than 22 percent of all of the biotechnology venture capital funding in the United States.
