BioPharm America™ unveils program for intelligent and productive biotech business development
Boston, MA – July 20, 2010: Boston becomes the center of business development worldwide for biotechnology and pharmaceutical executives during three days in September at BioPharm America™. To be held September 15–17, 2010 at the Marriott Boston Copley Place, BioPharm America is expected to draw the active participation of the large Massachusetts-based life science community, as well as a strong contingent of out of state and international firms.

The New Healthcare Ecosystem: What is Biotech’s Role?
This session will explore how the healthcare system is moving away from the blockbuster model and the traditional discovery and development approach towards a model of more individual and personalized treatments and increased collaboration with the biotech sector. The speakers Mara Aspinall, On-Q-Ity; Deborah Dunsire, Millennium Pharmaceuticals; and Robert Langer, MIT will discuss the new order between the different players in the healthcare system: biotech, pharma, diagnostics, payors, etc. and the impact this is having on drug development and healthcare delivery.
Open Innovation: All for One and One for All?
Arguably a more collaborative approach to academic and industry data would make research faster, cheaper and more efficient. But of course scientists and companies have a legitimate interest in protecting their inventions from infringement. In a world where information is increasingly moving from the private into the public domain, Glen Giovannetti, Ernst & Young LLP, will lead a high level panel in an exploration of a more open approach to medical research.
From the Trenches: Partnering War Stories
What are the hidden factors that can either cement a deal or kill it? Within each organization, there are internal dynamics that can shift the balance in a critical way. Daphne Zohar, Puretech Ventures will get a panel of senior leaders and industry veterans that includes Garry Neil, Johnson & Johnson; Mary Tanner, Peter J. Solomon Company; and Patrick Vallance, GlaxoSmithKline to share case studies of high-profile transactions that were consummated and those that never made it past the altar, with a focus on the key factors that made the difference.
“The partnering outcome is often influenced by politics, personalities, and competing internal programs. The Partnering War Stories panel will explore the internal dynamics that can make or break a deal,” added Zohar.
