Top biomedical industry leaders gather for BioPharm America™ conference to discuss key strategies to build strong partnerships
Carlsbad, CA and Boston, MA – August 23, 2010: EBD Group today announced additional program highlights that will be featured at the BioPharm America™ partnering conference, to be held September 15–17, 2010 at the Marriott Boston Copley Place. Each session features top industry leaders from across the globe who discuss and share their insight on growing trends and key strategies for building strong partnerships. Now in its third year, BioPharm America has grown to become a central hub for US and international life science firms to develop the partnerships that lead to tomorrow’s medical innovations.
This year’s event features a business development and strategy track where some of the leading biotech dealmakers and scientific thought leaders will delve into the key issues, new business approaches and policy trends underlying strategic decision making:
Driving Personalized Medicine: The New Business Model among Rx, Dx, Medtech and Payors
It is evident that healthcare is shifting towards utilizing more personalized medicine practices. Last year, a single American Society of Clinical Oncology abstract led to a doubling in KRAS testing nearly overnight. Only a year later, KRAS testing rates for colorectal and lung cancer patients stand at nearly 100 percent at major cancer centers in the USA and Europe. With this rapidly changing environment in healthcare, how should biomedical companies position themselves effectively in personalized medicine? To walk through the issue that surround personalized medicine and analyze emerging business models, Bryan Dechairo, Medco Health Solutions; Susan Graf, Roche Partnering; Dana Hendricks, Pfizer; and Chris Varma, Third Rock Ventures; come together to discuss this compelling topic which will be moderated by Harry Glorikian, Scientia Advisors.
Serial Entrepreneurs: What Makes Them Do It Again, and Again, and Again?
This session will take a close look at experienced entrepreneurs. What motivates them and why do they select their projects? What were some of their best/worst, easiest/hardest decisions as CEO? Why did certain deals happen, while others fell through? Vaughn Kailian, MPM Capital; will moderate a panel featuring Kevin Johnson Index Ventures; John Mendlein Fate Therapeutics; and Mark Skaletsky, Fenway Pharmaceuticals; in an examination of what makes biotech entrepreneurs “tick” and get their take on some pressing issues around financing, partnering and company building.
Access to Innovation: Dissecting Big Pharma and Biotech’s Renewed Interest in Early Stage Deals
Pharmaceutical companies are increasingly reliant on external research to fill their pipelines. This session will look at the strategic approach of pharma and large biotech companies to access innovation in the future, including an increase in early stage deal activity. Daniel Curran, Millennium: The Takeda Oncology Company; George S. Golumbeski, Celgene Corporation; and James Sabry, Genentech, join moderator Gautam Aggarwal, Campbell Alliance, to discuss among in-licensing, acquisitions, collaborative approaches and corporate venture programs, which models allow the greatest access to innovation.
Lean and Mean vs. Brick and Mortar: What’s the Right size to Succeed?
This session will explore the options for building a biotech company in today’s capital environment. Do you stay “lean and mean” to improve focus and capital efficiency, but also concentrate your risk profile? Or do you make the larger investment in a broader pipeline and infrastructure, to mitigate the risk of a single product failure? This panel, which includes Michael French, Marina Biotech; Michael Gilman, Stromedix; Mark Levin, Third Rock Ventures; Eric Risser, MacroGenics, Inc.; and David U'Prichard, Druid BioVentures; is moderated by John Carroll, FierceBiotech, and will explore the different models for drug development in a high risk, capital intensive industry.
