BIO-Europe 2009: World’s Leading Biotech Companies, Pharmaceutical Firms and Financiers Get Ready for Three Days of Intense Partnering in Vienna
BIO-Europe 2009 on pace to achieve record partnering activity
Carlsbad, CA, Zurich, Switzerland and Vienna, Austria – October 9, 2009: With partnering deals still driving drug development markets, this year’s BIO-Europe conference is set to establish new standards for generating quality partnering meetings and providing the insights needed to successfully operate in an era of dramatic biotech industry change. Many of the most respected industry thought leaders and decision makers will once again travel to BIO-Europe to examine the issues, new business approaches and policy trends that are vital to biotech’s successful long term future. To date, there are already 2,002 licensing opportunities, an impressive 1,170 companies from 46 countries registered, and over 2,000 delegates actively booking one-to-one meetings.
In a year in which the biotech sector has gone through dramatic changes, a central theme to BIO-Europe 2009 is addressing the challenge of how to maintain the innovation levels necessary to drive future revenue streams. Traditional business models in biotech are heavily reliant on venture funding, but the 2008–2009 financial crisis may have inflicted a potentially mortal wound to this model. The need for new, non-traditional sources of funding is being felt by biotechs the world over.
In the opening plenary session, “
Rethinking the Drug Development Business Model”, Denise Pollard-Knight, PhD – CEO, Nomura Phase4 Ventures will lead a distinguished panel featuring Hakan Bjorklund, PhD – CEO, Nycomed; Arlene Morris – President and CEO, Affymax; Ian Nicholson, MBA – CEO, Chroma Therapeutics; and Dan Zabrowski – PhD, Global Head of Pharma Partnering, F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd. who will share their insights on the metamorphosis of the life science industry. They will discuss the impact these developments will have on their business strategies, and investigate whether there are new and more sustainable ways of funding drug development on the horizon
