Carlsbad, USA, and Shanghai, China, June 5, 2009: EBD Group and ChinaBio® LLC, today announced that the first annual ChinaBio® Partnering Forum 2009 partnering event, June 23–24 in Shanghai, China, will host some of the biggest names in the international biotech industry. Featured on panels and workshops, leading decision makers will tackle the central issues for success in China.

Partnering in China—the New Frontier: China has become a global hotbed of technology development for big pharma. All of the large multinational companies now have R&D centers in China, most based in Shanghai. As its domestic industry rapidly evolves, China offers a growing number of collaboration and partnering opportunities with emerging companies, universities and institutes. Moderator Greg Scott, President and Founder, ChinaBio® LLC will be joined by speakers Dr. Mervyn Turner, Chief Strategy Officer, Merck & Co., Inc; Dr. Samantha Du, CEO, Hutchison MediPharma; and Liam Condon, Managing Director, Bayer Healthcare China, to examine the key questions for all pharma and biotech companies looking for partnering opportunities in China.

Capital Outlook for China Biopharma: The financial crisis has changed the international biopharmaceutical landscape dramatically. In China, a unique set of circumstances, including government funding, big pharma interest and continued VC funding makes the current climate there more positive than elsewhere in the world. Leading industry financial experts Helen Chen, Partner and Head of China Life Sciences, L.E.K. Consulting; Bo Wen, Executive Director, The Balloch Group; Dr. Carl Firth, VP, Asia, Merrill Lynch; and Dr, Chika Yoshinaga Yao, VP, Asia, Sofinnova Partners, will review what opportunities and challenges the future may hold for the dynamic growth region that is China.

China’s Outsourcing Revolution: Dwindling pipelines and shrinking revenue are problems most pharmaceutical companies are facing today. To make R&D more efficient, many of them are building virtual development groups, especially in China where costs are much lower. As a result, the CRO/CMO industry is booming, and in fact, two of the largest CRO facilities in the world are currently being built in China. Dr. Wendy R. Jory, Services Segment Leader, Discovery Services, Life Technologies will lead a panel featuring Dr. Darren Ji, CEO, PharmaLegacy Laboratories (Shanghai); Dr. Stephen Porter, CSO, Medicilon-MPI Preclinical Research; and Dr. Dan Zhang, Chairman and CEO, Fountain Medical Development, in an examination of the impact of the outsourcing revolution in China and how it is creating opportunities for increased productivity and collaborative development projects as well as lowered costs.

Life Science Clusters in China—Where, What and How: The China government has created a strong financial stimulus to build a solid domestic biotech/biopharma industry. This has resulted in the launch of several major life science clusters throughout China. Officials and executives from the top life science parks and agencies in China, including Dr. Don Qiu, General Manager, ChinaBio® LLC; Yuwen Liu, General Manager, BioBay; and Dr. Xiaolin Wei, Vice General Manager, Shanghai Z.J. Biotech & Pharmaceutical Base Development Co., will present the advantages each region offers and specific incentive programs, as well as a “where to” and “how to” approach to establishing a presence in China.

From Research to Commercialization—Starting at Square One: Commercializing early stage technology is a challenge anywhere in the world. Starting with essentially a clean sheet, China has the opportunity to do things differently. This also means that there is little experience and expertise at hand to draw from. A panel led by David Flores, Co-founder, President and CEO, BioCentury Publications, and featuring Alex Fowkes, Head of R&D, Asia, Pfizer; Dr. Frank Grams, Executive Director, Asia, Roche Pharma Partnering; Dr. Jennifer Hu, Director, Licensing and External Research, Merck & Co., Inc.; and Dr. Yi Zhun Zhu, Dean, School of Pharmacy, Fudan University, will examine what is currently working in China, what is not, what lessons can be gleaned from the experience in the US and Europe, and how to be successful at moving technology developed in China from the lab into the clinic.

Cross-border M&A and Strategic Alliances in China—Opportunities and Challenges: China's drug market is growing at an enormous speed and has become an essential market for all big pharma and biotech players. In addition to increasing direct investment into China, overseas players have different initiatives and plans in forming strategic alliances with local companies in terms of R&D, manufacturing, commercialization and service. Influenced by Chinese government incentives and the tremendously growing talent pool, Chinese life science companies are getting competitive on an international level. As a consequence, more cross-border M&As will also take place in this industry. Dr. Ruediger Herrmann, Partner, WilmerHale, will lead a distinguished panel featuring Dr. Carl Firth, VP, Asia, Merrill Lynch; Michael Heerde, Head, Business Development, Bayer HealthCare China; Kewen Jin, PhD, General Manager, Charles River Greater China; and Dr. Victor Shi, Asia President, QIAGEN, to discuss in detail what are the opportunities and challenges accompanying such exciting transactions.
