Grenoble: A way of life

Grenoble is located in southeastern France and is one of the major towns of the Rhône-Alpes Region (435,400 people), as well as being the Prefecture of the Isère Département. Grenoble nestles in a green setting at the heart of three alpine massifs: Belledonne, Chartreuse and Vercors. The flattest town in France is situated at 213 m altitude. An urban cable car, the first of its kind, has been taking visitors to the top of the Bastille, 263 meters above since 1934.

A stunning view of the city is yours to discover. The city, its construction and history are revealed: In the middle, a historical center, dense, with a prestigious past (over 2,000 years of history), to the west an internationally recognized scientific center, to the south an urban explosion accelerated by the Winter Olympics of 1968, and to the east a university campus with 61,700 students. With the three alpine peaks creating a natural Y-shape, Grenoble has three different entry points: one from Valence and Lyon, another from the south and the Route Napoléon, and the last from Chambéry and Italy.

A pronounced university and scientific presence gives Grenoble a young and cosmopolitan image, that of a town in perpetual movement.
