Country:  Denmark
Region:  Europe
Mission:

Our mission is to help save the Northern Bluefin from extinction by providing the current industry in Spain and the Mediterranean an alternative to fishing which will allow the wild population to recover.

Sector:  Spotlight on Environment
Year Founded:  2005

Description:

Futuna Blue is a company, operating near Cadiz in Spain, dedicated to producing Bluefin Tuna juveniles in a sustainable land-based recirculation system for sale to the existing tuna ranchers and fishermen in the Mediterranean.

Futuna Blue Spain SL is the largest private business venture in the Mediterranean for the production of juvenile Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus) in sustainable aquaculture methods.

We firmly believe in the commitment to perpetuate the breeding future of this species and therefore we are pioneers in our supply of juvenile tuna. Our unique Hatchery and patented technology can and is being applied to other species. Initial trials have produced market leading yields and exceptional quality of healthy juvenile fish.

Social Impact:

Our hatcheries will create industries and employment opportunities for depressed econmies and disadvantaged communities. We strongly believe that part of the solution for saving endangered species is to provide a viable alternative method to fishing for the existing fishermen. If they have an alternative profitable livelyhood then they can support reductions in fishing quotas, marine reserves etc,. Our system does this and it is planned to replicate our Spanish facility all around the globe.
